Biological Information
Background Information:
The evidence that reactive species of oxygen (O2-, H2O2 and OH-) play an important role in pulmonary oxygen toxicity, inflammation, ischemia/reperfusion injury, etc., and that superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC.1.15.1.1) provides a defense against superoxide radicals, increases continuously. This enzyme catalyzes the dismutation of two superoxide radicals (O2-) into O2 and H2O2. Many methods have been devised to measure superoxide dismutase activity; the method described below is based on the inhibition of nitroblue tetrazolium reduction with xanthine-xanthine oxidase used as a superoxide generator. Agents that decrease superoxide O2- formation may have therapeutic potential for treatment of the above noted disease states.
